Magical Kurumi-chan
Magical Kurumi-chan (まじかる☆くるみちゃん) is a fictional magical girl series often mentioned in Innocence Seekers: The Black Rose. In-universe, it was created by Namari mangaka Noriko Yoshikawa and the first chapter was released in 2005 in the Namari language. A Japanese translation by the same author was published in 2006. In 2008, it was adapted into a 24-episode (2-cour) anime and aired in Namari and Japan, while a second 24-episode season was aired in 2011. It has proven especially popular with young girls in Namari, however, its popularity in Japan is somewhat less due to competition.
Characters
Main characters
Kurumi Uchiyama (内山 胡桃)
- "I don't understand what's going on, but I'll do my best."
Kurumi is the main character of the story. At the beginning of the story she is an ordinary fifth-grader, whose concerns lie more with school and friends than the state of the world. However, that changed when she came across a strange creature named Kuruwana, who told her about her destiny and gave her a device allowing her to transform into a magical girl.
As a magical girl, Kurumi is "Kuru Pink" and her primary weapon is the bow. Her preferred element is light.
In-universe, Kurumi is voiced by Ruri Ōkura (大倉 るり) in Japanese.
Sana Oguri (小栗 沙奈)
- "Kurumi, is it really okay to fight? I mean, aren't you worried about whether it'll be the last thing you do?"
Sana is Kurumi's best friend. She was dragged into the ongoing struggle against Akumiru when she was caught in a battle between Kurumi and one of Akumiru's minions. At that point Kuruwana realised that Sana had inherent magical power and gave her a device similar to that given to Kurumi.
As a magical girl, Sana is "Kuru Blue" and her primary weapon is the staff. Her preferred element is ice.
In-universe, Sana is voiced by Saori Mikawa (三川 沙織) in Japanese.
Suzue Matsui (松井 鈴恵)
- "Kuruwana, was it? I guess I have no choice. I'll do it."
Suzue is a classmate of Kurumi and Sana. One day, while she was walking home from school, one of Akumiru's minions attacked her, and she was saved when Kurumi and Sana rushed to her rescue in the nick of time. Like with Sana, Kuruwana noticed Suzue's magic power and gave her a similar device.
As a magical girl, Suzue is "Kuru Yellow" and her primary weapon is the gun. Her preferred element is electricity.
In-universe, Suzue is voiced by Sumi Uemura (上村 すみ) in Japanese.
Aya Fujiwara (藤原 綾)
- "I don't quite understand everything you're saying. But it seems Kurumi, Sana and Suzue are fighting to restore your world, right?"
Aya is a friend of Suzue and a classmate of Kurumi and Sana. She was the one who nursed Kuruwana back to health when Kuruwana was attacked by one of Akumiru's minions. Kuruwana told Aya that she has the ability to fight alongside Kurumi.
As a magical girl, Aya is "Kuru Green" and her primary weapon is the sword. Her preferred element is wind.
In-universe, Aya is voiced by Natsuko Takagi (高城 夏子) in Japanese.
Chiho Takagawa (高川 千穂)
- "Kurumi, it's not like I want to help you or anything like that... but I'll join your group. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm only doing this for Kuruwana!"
Chiho is a classmate of Kurumi and Sana. She had met Kuruwana while walking home from school, who told her about her magic powers.
As a magical girl, Chiho is "Kuru Red" and her primary weapon is the spear. Her preferred element is fire.
In-universe, Chiho is voiced by Mika Matsuguchi (松口 みか) in Japanese.
Kuruwana (くるわな)
- "Everyone, for the sake of my world, let's go and defeat Akumiru once and for all!"
Kuruwana is a creature who came from another world. She arrived on Earth after her home planet, Kubirun, was rendered near-uninhabitable by Akumiru. While on Earth, she searched for the five young warriors prophesised to defeat Akumiru and restore Kubirun.
In-universe, Kuruwana is voiced by Eri Satō (佐藤 英里) in Japanese.
Supporting characters
Rina Uchiyama (内山 梨菜)
Rina is Kurumi's younger sister. Kuruwana noted that she has the potential to become a magical girl, but knew that her young age meant that she would not be suited for fighting Akumiru and her minions.
Shizuka Uchiyama (内山 静)
Shizuka is Kurumi's mother. She seems to know a lot about Kubirun.
Kaoruko Oguri (小栗 香子)
Kaoruko is Sana's mother.
Antagonists
Akumiru (あくみる)
- "Kuruwana, I see you are remarkably persistent. Just how many times to I have to beat you down? As for you girls, I hope you like the taste of death. For that is the fate of anyone who dares to oppose me!"
Akumiru is the main antagonist of the story. Initially not much is known about her, however, she has rendered Kuruwana's home planet of Kubirun near-uninhabitable.
In-universe, Akumiru is voiced by Yuki Matō (間藤 由紀) in Japanese.
Items
This section lists important items which appear in the story.
Kuru Wand (くるの杖, kuru no tsue)
The Kuru Wands are objects which allow the girls to use magic. While their primary purpose is to serve as transformation devices, they can be used by themselves to cast spells and even materialise weapons. The wands are colour-coded to match the colour theme of the girl (e.g. Kurumi's wand is pink, while Sana's is blue). The wands do not need to be in their owners' hands for them to be used; simply focusing on the wand allows magic to be used.
The wands themselves can be moved telepathically by their owners, even if thousands of light-years separate the owner and the wand. While the wand is being moved telepathically, it can pass through any matter which would obstruct its path.
World Orb (世界の小玉, sekai no kodama)
World Orbs are said to be the very essence of life on a planet, and are responsible for ensuring a planet remains habitable. Most habitable planets have either four or five World Orbs, each representing an element. However, the disturbance or destruction of only one of these orbs can cause widespread disasters throughout a planet, and destroying three or four can easily render a planet uninhabitable. There is a way to restore destroyed World Orbs; however, it requires a corresponding World Orb from another planet.
In Kubirun, Akumiru had destroyed all five World Orbs, which forced the population to evacuate to space stations which had, at most, a year's worth of supplies to sustain one million.
Story
April 20XX, XXX Prefecture, Japan. Kurumi and her friends had just begun her fifth year of elementary school. However, one day, while walking home from school, she came across an injured creature, who did not look like anything seen on Earth. The creature spoke to Kurumi, which surprised her. The creature, who introduced herself as Kuruwana, said that she came to Earth after escaping the near-destruction of her home planet by a being named Akumiru, and that she came to Earth to find five young girls who had the power to defeat Akumiru. She continued, explaining that Kurumi was one of those girls. Kurumi could hardly believe what she was hearing. At that point one of Akumiru's minions appeared and attacked Kuruwana. Kuruwana, knowing that there was no time, gave a Kuru Wand to Kurumi and told her to close her eyes, focus, and recite a short phrase to turn into a magical girl.

Trivia
- Magical Kurumi-chan was partially inspired by the Pretty Cure anime series.
- The "X"s in the date and setting are deliberate; they indicate that the setting should not be taken as an actual location and time period.
- In Japanese, if a name would normally be written in katakana, it is written in hiragana instead (e.g. くるわな instead of クルワナ). This applies only to characters and locations from Kubirun.
- The given names of the five girls are usually written in hiragana (くるみ for Kurumi, さな for Sana, すずえ for Suzue, あや for Aya, ちほ for Chiho); the kanji is used only if the character's full name is used.
