This post will go over the languages spoken by the Donsilans. By nature, the Donsilan languages have more grammatical “complexity” than human languages, making them rather difficult to learn for humans. In addition, Donsilan languages change little over the years (for the common language of the pendant holders, the writing system used can easily be written for 7,000-year-old language as it can be for the modern language).
First, a background. In the Innocence Seekers setting, most, if not all, human languages are ultimately derived from a Donsilan language due to intermittent influences. Even after leaving the galaxy, some Donsilans have returned to tend to the planets that were still habitable, and along the way did some “experiments” on the native fauna. Some of the results of this included the rise of sentient species. As a matter of fact, in the setting, there is a grain of truth to the myths regarding the acquisition of language.
So far, the only language I’ve developed is a derivative of Indo-European languages. However, it is, in general, more complex than any attested Indo-European language, and the pattern is similar for all Donsilan languages. For example, it retains inflectional noun ablaut where only the oldest real-life languages have nouns displaying inflectional ablaut be few and irregular. Of course, I’ve had to make changes to adapt the vocabulary, and since despite their conservatism the Donsilan languages still undergo change, I’ve added a few sound changes of my own.
Note that there is also a set of languages that won’t be derived from real-life languages. I’ve yet to begin work on these languages.
