In the Innocence Seekers series, magical girls and former magical girls all have what is known as an Inherent Ability. The nature of this ability varies, but it is usually fairly specific and very powerful in its own right. This blog post will talk about some of the Inherent Abilities found in Innocence Seekers: The Black Rose. Note that I’ve only made Inherent Abilities for a small portion of the entire cast (and there are a lot of characters; at the rate I’m going I may end up with well over a hundred named characters; the wiki article, which has 31 as of writing, only has a subset of female characters).
Akari’s Inherent Ability is Eternal Stream. This is a purely passive ability, and it grants her the ability to move and act while time is stopped, as long as the source of the time stop is within four kilometres. Amelia has a similar ability, but it is limited to three kilometres, and is only effective if the source of the time stop has the same magic colour as her. However, unlike Akari’s ability, Amelia’s ability allows her to attack objects and enemies without requiring time to flow for the target. In Innocence Seekers: Akari of the Light, it is hinted that this ability may be useful against Gakran.
Michiru’s Inherent Ability is Clairvoyance. This is also a purely passive ability, and allows her to sense the location of anything within ten kilometres, no matter how well it is hidden (for magic-based cloaking, either the magic is dispelled or a Paradox Blast occurs at the location of the target). Fuyuka has a similar ability, but its range is limited to five kilometres, and allows an attack “without speed” (effectively bypassing any and all defences, including armour; Michiru’s ability still requires attacks to travel at least two metres to the target, allowing it to be stopped by magic barriers, shields and armour).
Yayoi’s Inherent Ability is Follower. This is a purely active ability, but it can be activated at any time, at increased mana cost. This ability gives all of Yayoi’s ranged attacks a homing property. This means that such attacks will unerringly follow the target, and if necessary, pick up speed. Note that there is no limit to how much momentum an attack boosted by Follower can have, and it is theoretically possible for such an attack to get very close to the speed of light (and woe betide anyone who gets hit by such an attack).
I should mention, though, that the Miyana family’s Inherent Abilities often emphasise overwhelming power and/or speed over more passive abilities. For example, Mutsuki’s and Uzuki’s Inherent Abilities are singular attacks which entail an elemental blast, and are exceptionally powerful (enough to destroy spaceships).
Hiyori’s Inherent Ability is Binds of Blessings This is a purely active ability which ensures her binds are unbreakable by any means (other than by anything which will lead to a Paradox Blast, such as Chelsea’s Inherent Ability). It can only be activated in Full Burst mode.
I’ll mention more Inherent Abilities later. In the meantime, I’ll mention the Paradox Blast. A Paradox Blast arises whenever two directly opposing states or powers which cannot be stopped or dispelled (such as Inherent Abilities) meet each other. Because this is effectively an “irrestible force meets immovable object” type scenario, there is no logical solution to the conflict. As such, the universe is forced to adjust itself, and the resulting alterations in reality result in a powerful void-elemental blast. This blast bypasses any and all defences, and destroys any and all physical matter within a certain radius. Magical beings may be able to resist a Paradox Blast, to an extent, but any objects within the vicinity of the blast will (at least partially, if not fully) be converted into pure energy (in the form of photons). No one knows the complete nature of a Paradox Blast, but it is known to be magical in nature.
